Cookie Policy
This page explains what small text files this site places on your device, why each one is used, how long each one lasts, and how you can control them. It should be read together with the Privacy Policy.
1. What a cookie is
A cookie is a short text file that a site asks your browser to keep. When you return to the site, the browser sends the file back, which lets the site remember something about the visit. Related technologies, such as local storage, work in a similar way and are covered by the same rules here. A cookie is not a program, it cannot read files on your device, and it cannot by itself identify you by name.
2. Categories used on this site
Cookies are grouped by what they do. The table below lists the groups that may appear on BitrateCraft pages, which includes articles that discuss the HandBrake project and other encoding tools.
| Category | Purpose | Lifetime | Consent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Keeps the page working and remembers a security token for the contact form | Session | Not required |
| Preference | Remembers choices such as a larger text size or a dismissed notice | Up to 12 months | Optional |
| Analytics | Counts visits and page views in aggregate so the desk knows which articles are useful | Up to 13 months | Optional |
| Embedded media | Set only if a page shows third-party media; may be used by that provider | Set by provider | Optional |
3. Strictly necessary cookies
These keep the site working. They carry a security token that protects the contact form from automated abuse, and they remember the state of the current page. Because the site cannot function without them, they are placed on the basis of the desk's legitimate interest in a working, safe site, and they are not used to build a profile.
4. Preference cookies
These remember choices you make, such as a larger text size or the fact that you dismissed a notice. They save you from repeating the same choice on every visit. They are optional, and if you clear them the site simply forgets the preference.
5. Analytics cookies
These count visits and page views in aggregate. The desk uses the counts to learn which articles are read and which are ignored. The figures are aggregated, and the desk does not attempt to single out an individual reader. Analytics are optional and are placed only after you agree.
6. Embedded media
If a page includes media hosted by another provider, that provider may place its own cookies when the media loads. The desk does not control those cookies and does not receive the information they hold. Where the option exists, such media is loaded only after you ask for it.
7. How to control cookies
Every major browser lets you see, block, and delete cookies. The exact wording differs, but the path is similar in each case.
- Open the browser's settings and find the privacy or security section.
- Open the cookie or site-data list to see what is stored and delete individual entries.
- Choose to block third-party cookies, which stops most cross-site tracking.
- Use a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when the window closes.
Blocking all cookies may stop the contact form from working, because its security token depends on one. A browser's help pages describe the exact steps for that browser.
8. Signals and choices
Where a browser sends an automated signal asking sites not to track, the desk treats it as a request to keep analytics off. Because analytics are optional here, refusing them costs you nothing and changes nothing about what you can read.
9. Changes to this policy
If the categories used on the site change, this page changes with them and the revision date at the foot of the page is updated. Material changes are noted on the home page for a reasonable period.
